Traffic engineering is a new stream in engineering. This has hot relevance due to heavy population of vehicles all over the world. Buying a car or a bike is not a herculean task nowadays. An engineer who is dealing with traffic is called as traffic engineer. His main responsibilities are:
1. Proper planning for transportation to ensure smooth, safe and orderly transportation. This requires thorough study of data available. Formulation of mathematical models, simulation etc. can be employed for better performance.
2. Collection of data linked to traffic. You can seek help of statisticians for this. This includes vehicle volume data, vehicle speed, road condition, accident statistics, parking areas, pedestrian behavior etc.
3. Based on data and planning, design traffic and execute.
4. Overall administration.
